Fake diamonds differ from genuine diamonds in many ways. An ultraviolet light, also known as a black light, will reflect differently in most diamonds, thereby making it a useful tool in detecting fake diamonds. Buying a diamond is a large investment.

Be aware that while the majority of diamonds on the market will have a blue glow under UV light, high quality diamonds will not. The UV light method should be performed along with other tests to detect a fake diamond.

Cubic zirconia may glow mustard yellow under a UV light. Glass will have no glow at all.

Familiarize yourself with the other methods of detecting fake diamonds, such as the reflection colors within the stone, the weight, the quality of the setting and the wear and tear on the stone itself.

Know that the final word on detecting a fake diamond is a professional appraisal. A certified and experienced gemologist will have the knowledge and skills needed to determine without a doubt that the diamond in question is authentic or a fake.

Keep the loupe about an 2-3cm from your eye & the item you’re looking at about 2-3cm away as well. This is the most accurate away. Learning how to focus takes practice. Once you find a sharp focus on the surface of the stone, you can examine the surface but not what’s inside the stone. If you want to see further into the stone, you have to move the stone slowly, closer or farther away until you get the correct focus into the stone.

Find a way to keep your hand steady. You can do that by putting the fleshy part of your arms together or bracing your arm against something like a counter or desk.

Its vital to keep your hands or arms very steady so that you’re not wobbling, and to hold the loupe so it’s in contact with some part of your face. Some people hold it against their eyeglasses and use that as a  brace. Some use their cheekbones, some use their nose. I’ve never mastered using my nose. You have to find what works for you, but the loupe has to be touching some part of your face in a way that allows you to see through it.”

Remember, a novice will not be able to see what professionals who have been using a loupe for years can see. But use your loupe regularly and you will gain proficiency. Slowly, you’ll begin to see more and more inside each stone.
