Manual

1. Product Overview

The Fluorescent Diamond UV Box is a gemmological testing instrument designed to observe fluorescence reactions in diamonds and gemstones under ultraviolet (UV) light. It is equipped with both short-wave (SW) and long-wave (LW) UV light sources and a light-shielded viewing chamber for safe, controlled observation.

This instrument is commonly used by gemmologists, jewellers, dealers, laboratories, and educators to assist in gemstone identification and analysis.

2. Intended Use

This UV box is intended for:

• Observing diamond fluorescence

• Distinguishing natural diamonds from some simulants

• Identifying fluorescence characteristics in gemstones

• Educational and comparative gem testing

Note: UV fluorescence is an observational aid only and should not be used as the sole method of gemstone identification.

3. Understanding UV Wavelengths

Long-Wave UV (LW)

• Typically ~365 nm

• Most commonly used in gemmology

• Many diamonds fluoresce blue under LW UV

• Generally safer than short-wave UV, but still requires precautions

Short-Wave UV (SW)

• Typically ~254 nm

• Used for more advanced testing

• Can reveal reactions not visible under LW

• Requires stricter safety precautions

4. Safety Information (IMPORTANT)

Ultraviolet light can be harmful to eyes and skin if used incorrectly.

Always observe the following safety rules:

• Never look directly at UV lamps

• Keep the UV box lid closed during operation

• Avoid direct skin exposure to UV light

• Do not operate the unit if the housing or lid is damaged

• Keep away from children and untrained users

UV-protective eyewear is strongly recommended, especially when using short-wave UV.

5. Setup & Preparation

1. Place the UV box on a stable, flat surface

2. Ensure the interior chamber is clean and dry

3. Work in a dim or darkened environment for best visibility

4. Ensure the correct power supply is connected (if applicable)

6. Operating Instructions

Step 1 — Place the Stone

• Open the UV box lid

• Place the diamond or gemstone flat inside the viewing chamber

• Close the lid fully before switching on the UV light

Step 2 — Select UV Mode

• Choose Long-Wave (LW) or Short-Wave (SW) using the selector switch

• Only operate one UV mode at a time

Step 3 — Observe Fluorescence

• View the stone through the observation window

• Note colour, intensity, and distribution of fluorescence

• Typical diamond fluorescence appears blue, but other colours may occur

Step 4 — Switch Off

• Turn off the UV lamp after observation

• Allow the lamp to cool before reopening the lid

7. Interpreting Results (General Guidance)

Fluorescence reactions vary by gemstone type:

• Diamonds may fluoresce blue, white, yellow, or show no reaction

• Some simulants and treated stones may show unusual reactions

• Fluorescence alone does not confirm authenticity

For accurate identification, results should be compared with trusted gemological reference charts and used alongside other testing methods.

8. Maintenance & Care

• Keep the interior clean and free of dust

• Do not touch UV bulbs with bare fingers

• Clean the viewing window with a soft, dry cloth

• Store in a cool, dry place when not in use

• Replace UV lamps only with correct specifications

9. Storage

• Ensure the unit is switched off and unplugged

• Store away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight

• Do not place heavy objects on top of the unit

10. Limitations & Disclaimer

This UV box is a support tool for gemmological observation. It does not replace professional laboratory analysis. CapeTools and the manufacturer accept no liability for misidentification based solely on UV fluorescence results.

Always combine UV testing with other gemmological methods and professional judgment.
