A CUT ABOVE THE REST!

Did you know?
A file is a metal, wood & wax working tool used to cut fine amounts of material . It most commonly refers to a hand tool, which takes the form of a hardened steel bar with a series of sharp, parallel ridges, called teeth. Most files have a narrow, pointed tang at one end to which a handle can be fitted to the user’s preference

Tips for July:

Paint by number, use by colour.
I'm sure like most goldsmiths you have a drawer full of loose needle files & find it frustrating to paw through the pile of files, looking for just the right one? Not only is this a waste of time, but it's also poor maintenance of your files, which aren't benefiting from being rubbed up against each other all the time. Here's a tip that will make it easy for you to spot just the right file…..
Pick out a half a dozen colours of nail polish, paint, coloured tape or coki pens. Assign each colour to a different file shape & paint the handles of the files accordingly. For instance, paint the ends of the flat files green; triangle files blue, and so on. When painting, use stripes of colour to indicate the cut. For example, paint one stripe for cut #1, four stripes for cut #4, etc. And to remind you which colour goes with which shape, paint a "key" around the base of your file holder; for example, paint a red square to represent the square files.
This system can also be used for larger "hand" files as well as gravers. Assign colours to different shapes, paint dots of colour on the handle to indicate the width of the tool: start with one dot for the narrowest & add dots as they get wider or thicker. This makes it a quick and easy to pick out the right tool, whether your gravers are spread out on your bench or neatly stacked in a rack. By colour-coding & sorting your small tools, you can save time & avoid unnecessary frustration. It is amazing how quickly you learn to spot your colourful new tools.
Vallorbe buff files:
Designed to be used as a finishing or burnishing tool. To give a precise finish to those hard to reach & delicate areas of your piece, these popular shaped needle files are designed to replace the majority of the work that emery sticks or abrasive paper would do.
