The wonderful world of casting & carving made simple!

Did you know?
Casting is a manufacturing process in which a molten metal is poured into a mould, which contains a hollow cavity of the desired shape, then allowed to cool down & solidify. The solidified metal part is also known as a casting, which is then broken out of the mold to complete the process to reveal the cast design.

What do I need to cast?

Carving waxes
From tubes, slabs, slices & sheets the range of carving & shaping waxes is vast! We also have all the tools needed from electronic carving irons for precise quick carving to the hand carvers, wax blades & filling repair & sculpting waxes. TIP use an old stocking over your finger and rub lightly on the surface to smooth out the wax models filing marks - the shinier the wax the smoother it will cast.
Crucibles
Choose from various styles of crucibles for centrifugal casting, normal melting from crucible to ingot. Made of fused silica with clay bond & suited to high melting temperatures. A handle or tongs should be added to make pouring easier. TIP : Don't forget sprinkle some borax which will help keep the impurities out of the metal!
Quality Injection waxes will make sure your item injects perfectly crisp & smooth, Varieties in melting point, shrinkage & detail are part of our range. Mould spray will also assist in getting the waxes out of your mould easily. The injection wax burns out in the invested flask & evaporates completely.
Thus referring to "lost wax casting".
Investment powder
Investment casting is used with all lost-wax casting , one of the oldest known metal-forming techniques. There are many types of Investment Powders for casting depending on what types of metal you casting with & the finish you desire.

Jewellers ingot

Adjustable combo sheet & wire ingot moulds, so two ingot moulds in one! These can be used to make upright wire ingots by placing the round sides together or reverse the plates to make adjustable sheet ingots. Flat options also available.
Electro smelting furnace
Ideal for workshop that does not want gas bottles & open flames around. This furnace is designed with a high temperature ceramic chamber for long-lasting smelting abilities & with a maximum capacity of 2 Kg in a special graphite crucible  .This unit is recommended for melting down precious metals of up to 1150 degrees Celsius.

Types of casting
Before casting the investment filled flask needs to have all the air bubbles removed, by the use of a de- bubbliser, then the investment needs to set & burnout all the wax in a kiln for a number of hours at a high temperature. Then you ready to either do centrifugal casting or vacuum casting!
Centrifugal casting
Centrifugal Casting Machines utilizes a swing arm pivoted to a cross arm. This swing arm spins around and carries the flask, keeping it in line with the casting force, so that the molten metal travels in a straight line directly from the crucible into the solid flask  (that was taken straight from the hot kiln). This enables the operator to produce extremely dense castings & prevents the molten metal from spilling.
Vacuum casting
The hot flask gets put into a Per Cast machine - This machine uses a vacuum to suck the molten metal into the mould / flask, so metal is melted in a crucible the vacuum function put on the machine & then poured into the perforated flask, the suction makes sure that all the hollow detail is filled.

Sand clay casting

This Clay is reusable & is used for moulding jewellery, miniatures, clock or watch parts . This method of casting enables you to make quick castings of the basic forms once off. This special clay must be used with aluminum rings that keep this sand in place in two perfectly connecting rings.

Cuttlefish Casting
Cuttlefish casting is a quick & pretty accurate casting method. Its applications are limited only by the thickness & size of the cuttlefish & the fact that you can only cast once. It is difficult to achieve fine detail on the surface of the casting, but the cuttlefish creates a very unique pattern on the surface.
Making moulds

Mould frames

These precision made frames will maintain their shape & dimensions under maximum temperatures & load variations. Frame openings are made to accept all standard mould rubbers available. Sprue formers, Scalpel handles & blades are a must when making moulds for mass production.

Moulding rubber:

Castaldo Econosil® Jewellery Moulding Rubber is a harder, firmer & flexible silicone jewellery moulding rubber at a lower cost. Firmer moulds mean less variation in final cast weights, greater detail & less distortion. It’s ideal for filigree & fine detail. Shrinkage is 1.1%.
Other options of liquid moulding silicons are available that do not need to be heated in a vulcaniser but rather air cure.
